frozen fruit with stuff on it

You are paying fourteen dollars for a smoothie you eat with a spoon. It's still good. It's just not what the price and the photos are selling.
The base is fine. Acai is a real fruit and it does have a lot of antioxidants. But unsweetened acai tastes bitter, so the frozen packs shops use are usually sweetened, and then blended with banana and apple juice to get the texture right. What ends up in the bowl is sweetened fruit puree, which is good, but that's what it is.
Then the toppings. Granola, honey drizzle, coconut flakes, more banana. Granola alone can run 400 calories a cup and nobody is measuring a cup. The honey is sugar. The bowl you see photographed with six toppings in neat rows has all six of those things in it, and they're most of what you're eating.
A large bowl at a lot of places lands somewhere between 500 and 800 calories with 60 to 90 grams of sugar. That's dessert territory. It does have real fruit and real fiber in it, so it's not identical to a sundae, but it isn't the light option either.
There's also almost no protein. Fruit, granola, and honey get you maybe 6 grams total, so you eat 700 calories and you're hungry two hours later. Same problem as a salad with nothing on it. Peanut butter fixes this and most people skip it because it doesn't photograph well.
Acai bowls are good and I'm not telling anyone to stop getting them. But it's closer to a milkshake than a salad, and most places sell it like it's the second one. If you want it to hold you over, go lighter on the sweet toppings and add peanut butter or something with fat in it. If you just want a treat with fruit in it, that's what you're already getting.
The price is the part that bothers me most. A frozen acai pack and whatever's in your kitchen gets you the same bowl for less than half the price.
